Allergic Reactions: Some individuals may develop allergic reactions to Rhodotorula species, particularly those who are sensitized to fungal allergens. Inhalation or direct contact with Rhodotorula spores or proteins can trigger allergic symptoms such as sneezing, nasal congestion, itchy eyes, or skin rashes.
Opportunistic Infections: While uncommon, Rhodotorula species can cause opportunistic infections, especially in immunocompromised individuals. These infections most commonly manifest as bloodstream infections (fungemia) or localized infections in areas such as the skin, nails, or respiratory tract.
Respiratory Issues: Inhalation of Rhodotorula spores or fragments may irritate the respiratory tract and exacerbate symptoms in individuals with pre-existing respiratory conditions such as asthma or chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD).
Skin and Nail Infections: Rhodotorula species have been reported to cause infections of the skin and nails, particularly in individuals with compromised skin barriers or those who have undergone invasive medical procedures.
Endophthalmitis: In rare cases, Rhodotorula species have been implicated in cases of endophthalmitis, an inflammation of the interior of the eye, usually resulting from an infection.
